James T. "Jim" Thompson, 92, of Owensboro, passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. He was born in Owensboro on September 26, 1925 to the late Everett Thompson and Florence Shoemaker Thompson. Jim was a US Navy Veteran, where he served as a torpedoman on a submarine, the USS Cero, during World War II, where he received 5 Patrol Stars. Jim retired from Central Bank & Trust as a Senior Vice President. He was a member of Immaculate Catholic Church, was a former Board Member and Treasurer of the Cliff Hagan Boys and Girls Club, and a former Board member of United Way. He served on several other boards and committees, and was a member of many clubs and organizations during his lifetime. Jim enjoyed golf, horse racing, playing poker with his buddies, gardening and going on walks. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Kathleen C. "Babe" Thompson who passed away in 2005, his son Mark E. Thompson, who passed away in 1989, grandson Christopher Thompson, his brothers Gene Thompson and Pat Thompson, and his sister Mary Lillian Lee. Jim is survived by his children Ruth Ann (Ray) Nelson of Grant AL, Keith T. Thompson of Owensboro, KY, Bruce F. (Stacy) Thompson of Owensboro, KY, Mary Kay (Joseph) Taylor of Grayson County, KY, and Amy E. Bird of Owensboro, KY, 9 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a special friend Kathryn Leach. Services will be 10:30 am Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Immaculate Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Mater Dolorosa Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 7:00 Friday, April 20, 2018, and from 9:00 am to 10:00 am Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Haley McGinnis Funeral Home & Crematory, with prayers being said at 6:30 pm on Friday. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Cliff Hagan Boys & Girls Club Endowment Fund, 3415 Buckland Square Drive; Owensboro, KY 42301.
